The eye of a short-sighted person is "too long", which means that the light ray focuses ahead of the cornea, instead of on it. In some exceptional cases, myopia is due to a lens that is ‘too convex’ and which can cause excessive convergence.

A hyperopic person has an eye that is "too short" or where the cornea is too flat.
